Do I need to build my own protection on vps hosting?

I didn’t use vps before, and now the question arose, to raise the server at home and build protection or rent vps, but is there protection against dos attacks and other attempts to hack or interfere with the site xs.
Do I need to build protection myself and does it make sense to rent? Can someone share their experience

It depends on what, say, protection against XSS and SQL injections, in any case, should be "built into" your site, the server will not provide it to you in any way,
full-fledged protection against bots so that their requests do not reach at all naturally also does not happen in principle, they can easily load server, and if you do something on TCP, it can lead to the crash of the TCP server program if you do not provide for authorization, of course, you cannot ban all possible IP addresses of bots in advance, but even if the bot's IP address is in some blacklists then the hosting administrators will not "itch" themselves - it has been tested in practice,
DDoS attacks are the same, in principle anyone who is "interfered" by your server can suit them.

Not a single hoster provides protection against children's DDoS, and there are 99 percent of such
