Do I need to add categories to sitemap.xml?

Colleagues, a question about sitemap.xml.
The site has a main page (seriously?? o_O), category pages in which articles are published, and pages of the articles themselves.
Do I need to add links to the main page and category pages to the sitemap if it (in the sitemap) already contains canonical links to the articles themselves?
