DIY NAS. What iron to choose?

In general, there was a desire to make a nas server for the home. having gone through the Internet, I figured out what was happening, but a question arose about the hardware: it just so happened that I don’t have an old computer that I could equip for a server. so I decided to ask you - what is the cheapest way to assemble hardware for a nas server? and immediately the question is in pursuit - what is the best iron to pick up so that everything works for years and does not lag or slow down.
ps while I'm leaning towards the option of buying an old system unit on Avito and equipping it. but still I think there is a better solution. (which thread is a computer the size of a flash drive, for example)
pps nas I'm going to use it just like a cloud. also download torrents through it. I'm going to install freenas software.
