We set the task: to set up the most secure encryption on the Netgear ReadyNAS RND 4000 network storage. I looked, there is no hardware encryption there. How can I set encryption?

Look towards TrueCrypt. Advantages:

opensource;
Encryption on the fly;
Ability to create both a cryptocontainer and an entire encrypted disk;
Support for multiple encryption standards.

The list goes on, there are many advantages.
