Display Port on video cards, under what conditions is the maximum number of monitors connected?

I bought a used ASUS 6950 video card with 2 DVI and 4 Display Port with the expectation to connect 4 DVI monitors. On nix (they really check it) the maximum supported number of monitors is written - 6.
What was my surprise when I connected 2 monitors via DVI, 2 via DVI - DisplayPort adapters, that the maximum number of monitors is only 2.
I understand correctly that I can connect to such a video card only 2 monitors with any port and only 4 monitors exclusively with DisplayPort?
