Development of a sound processor in C#

In addition to programming, I have always been interested in music, and finally decided to make something like my distortion in C#. So to speak, its own virtual pedal. As it turned out, there is not so much information on this subject and it is very difficult for me to understand where to start!
And I would like to hear advice from people who already had experience in similar areas and developed similar applications. Ideally, I would like to see the source of some very ordinary effect. And in general it is interesting what tools are used in the development of this kind of software.
It would be nice if I could provide links to current literature.
I hope I've been specific enough to formulate my question.

Do you need effects? Or the programming process itself?
I just don’t understand what this bike is for, because there is Vegas Pro.

In c# it is better not to operate with low levels - for this it is more dynamic and more flexible to use c++. In c#, the same distortion can be done through DirectX - there used to be even separate effects, and distortion too.

Good question. The essence, just the same, is in the bicycle (musicians will understand). I would add to it:
0. How to properly implement input and output (the so-called host for effects, including distortion)?
1. How, in fact, to write the distortion itself?
