Developing an electronic device as a hobby?

Good afternoon, as a hobby, I would like to develop an electronic device myself.
What is available now:
1. a lot of free time
2. some experience in software development and user interfaces
3. 3D printer for making mock-ups, device case, etc. etc.
4. Possibility to manufacture an aluminum case for the final device on the factory equipment
5. some amount of money for the purchase of everything
6. awareness of what I would like to receive
7. willingness to study, study and study again
8. English at an intermediate level
What is wrong:
1. lack of knowledge in electronics, circuitry and programming of specific devices
2. lack of understanding on what to do (I think it follows from the first point, I would not want to use ready-made constructors)
3. maybe from the author of the foot
What I would like to get:
1. the most compact device that only I can make
2. an independent device that would connect to Android devices and iPhone via bluetooth, without requiring additional software (well, ideally, of course) on the side of the phone, i.e. write the entire shell program.
3. The maximum quality that I can achieve from the device.
What according to the description of the device:
In general, control the player of the mobile phone via bluetooth.
1. Bluetooth module for communication with the phone
2. "Play\Pause", "vol +", " buttons(these three are on the front panel), "on / off", "bluetooth" (these two are on the edge).
3. Here I don’t even imagine the principle of implementation yet, swiping on the 3 buttons "Play \ Pause", "vol +", "vol -" switches the track back and forth (the essence is approximately the same as that of the ipod classic that has sunk into oblivion, where you could move around the menu by swiping the wheel), well, unless of course it’s really possible to implement it yourself.
4. li-on battery that would be charged via usb-c is acceptable.
5. A speaker that will play system sounds.
Why is all this necessary:
1. Learn something new, it may be useful in the future, well, or not useful
2. Replace one addiction to spend evenings playing games with something more interesting and useful.
I would be very grateful for any advice on where to start, what to read, what to watch, maybe someone will share their experience.
In any case, thanks in advance for any help.

Better yet, start with esp32 (with a ready-made devboard ). Then you will have wifi and bluetooth.
Of course, you need to start with projects, as on arduino - blinking a diode, connecting to your point, raising a tcp server, etc. If you start small things, then it will be fine.
I followed a similar principle when I made my lamp .
You need to learn and read something in parallel with practice, otherwise you will study theory for a year and then you will get tired of everything.

I would look for ready-made microcircuits for this business, now the train has left and I don’t remember anything, but at one time there were a lot of options for bluetooth headsets. The trick is that for bluetooth, as well as for yusbi, there are certain unifications, just for the sake of accessories for mobile devices, so that they work "without drivers". Look for bluetooth modules for mobile accessories, this will be the easiest.
PS. Not so hot, what a complexity and most likely without programming at all, well, at most you will have to give birth to a "programmer" to prescribe the chip settings, but stretch your legs, it will do ...
PPS. And I would look at the torment of an arduinist who invents a bluetooth headset :-)

Developing an electronic device as a hobby?

Yes!
PS
Start with Arduino, it's all feasible on it, but in terms of a hobby it's not as labor-intensive as solutions on the same Xia .

The Pleasure of DIY - PCB Board , custom printed circuit board fabrication is not always the choice of electronic enthusiasts. Either because the price was created or the excess was set for mere demand. Compared with DIY PCB circuit board design takes a long time.
