Suggest descriptors that are invariant to affine transformations, as well as to resolution changes.
Perspective invariance is highly desirable.
You also need invariance to change the color gamut.
SURF is not even scale invariant.

And since when did the sift cease to be invariant? It seems like it is just for this purpose is best suited. Within reason, of course ...
Look at all sorts of GLOH, PCA-SIFT, Rank SIFT. Maybe one of them is better for your specific task.
