We connect the flash drive.
We are loaded from it.
We mount the main partition anywhere.
We chroot into the newly mounted directory.
Voila, we are now on disk, not liveusb. We mount /boot if necessary and do grub-install

In general, it should be, but what prevents you from installing it via apt-get ?
