Core i7 vs Core 2 Duo?

I want to change my laptop. I settled on the HP EliteBook 8560p (LY441EA): h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/me/en/sm/WF06b/321957-3219

old).
In the old Core 2 Duo T6500 (2M Cache, 2.10 GHz, 800 MHz FSB):
ark.intel.com/products/39311/
In the new Core i7-2640M Processor (4M Cache, 2.80 GHz):

Will there be a noticeable performance difference? Or an awl for soap?

Well, firstly www.notebookcheck-ru.com/Reiting-mobilnykh-processorov-sravnenie-proizvoditelnosti.14099.0.html
Secondly, the screw slows down the most in the system. Then the graphics can slow down from tasks. Again, memory decides.
It all depends on what you need a laptop for. Based on the fact that it will be faster to compile, the difference in speed, I would say, will not be very large, but to compress the video, then there will already be a noticeable difference.

I think changing hardware more than once every 3-5 years is indulging consumer instincts and paying tribute to transnational corporations. In general, this is a bad idea.

They say that replacing HDD with SSD affects visual performance much more tangibly than replacing C2D with i7.

Mobile ci7 differs from c2d primarily in lower power consumption. And in a laptop it is much more important than anything else.
And in terms of performance, any good five-year-old desktop stone will beat any laptop one with a large margin.
And any good desktop video card from five years ago will beat any mobile one in all respects.
And any good monitor is still more pleasing to the eye than any laptop.
And any normal keyboard is still more convenient. And for maniacs, there are even small keyboards with touchpads.
And at the same time, it still does not fry your hands, does not buzz with a turbine and does not make you either hold your hands above your head or slouch when accessing the buttons.
Laptops are not made for high performance and not for games and not for watching movies and not for convenience.
And to be able to take and carry away.

Megahertz is not very important these days. Here 4M cache is good.
In general, as you know, “The system works at the speed of the slowest element,” so comparing two systems only by percentage is rude.

The biggest jump in performance, since the first Core Duo, was felt when switching from HDD to SSD, and not when changing processors. Now, working with the HDD system, there is about the same strange feeling of nostalgic discomfort as when using a CRT monitor. PHPStorm, Eclipse, two working virtual machines: Win and CentOS with two subds - feel absolutely free on Core2Duo 1.86 GHz + SSD, so I don’t find any reason to change the stone. My opinion: try to change the screw first.

As an HP EliteBook 8560w (XU085UT) user, I can say that a powerful CPU without an SSD will not help much for compiling. But the SSD surprisingly speeds up large assemblies by 3-4 times.

the difference will be very strong. But I would advise you to take a quad core.

For heavy tasks, the difference will be very noticeable. I'll leave it here just for information:
My mobile i3-2310 2.13z GHz works 10-15% faster than my desktop Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHz in tests.

www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core2+Duo+T6500+%40+2.10GHz vs www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2640M+%40+2.80GHz - if there is money for an upgrade, then IMHO there is no need to think. SSD there, more memory, and it will be good for a few more years :)

You know, I had a laptop with a Core 2 Duo T6500 and at the start of Windows, until Skype started, it was very difficult to do something, I changed it to core i5 and this is heaven and earth. Although they say that megahertz is not important, but the difference will not be in megahertz, and not in the number of yards. The difference will be in the architecture of the processor, in the instruction set, and so on. i7 is an order of magnitude better than core 2 duo precisely because of the novelty and internal changes, even if the frequency is not higher and the cores are not larger.
An awl for soap will not be in any case, on the other hand, the first answer is very correct, if the screw is worse, then no percent will help, even a hundred nuclear ones, everything will load very slowly, but work very quickly and the difference will not be noticeable.

The i7 has HT - by no means a useless thing in the battle of processors.
Well, ssd + a lot of memory solves. I'm sitting at 8 now, all the brakes are due to the network.

I have two laptops
1. Asus A6M - for ESXi taxiing, etc. server gadgets.
2. Motion Computing LE 1600 - for testing the network and drawing all sorts of goodies for the authorities (at planning meetings).
They have one extra for two. DasVision BP-600 battery - in case there is no outlet nearby.
I have been using all this since 2008 and have never thought about replacing it.

Friends, sorry for the necropost, but I recently started testing all the computers that I use, and I can make some kind of report.
I compared the CPU_Queen test in AIDA64, and my observations almost coincided with the test data.
I have: 4x Xeon E5420 / 3300 MHz / Asus P5Q SE / P45 Dual DDR2-880 / 5-5-5-15 CR2
Gives out 27370 parrots (from 2.5 overclocked to 3.3). Everything is working. Nothing slows down. (I play tanks sometimes and NFS RUN)
At work: 2x Pentium Gold G5400 HT 3700 MHz/MSI B360M Pro-VDH
Gives out 25147 parrots, but slows down in the browser so that I want to hit him with a shocker and demand a new one.
For a child: 4x Athlon II X4 630 2800 MHz / Asus M4A785TD-V Evo / Ganged Dual DDR3-1339
Gives out 20430 parrots, has been working like a watch for many years.
Friend's computer : 2x Core i3-540 HT/3076 MHz/Asus P7P55D/Dual DDR3-1338
Gives out 19603 parrots. It works fine, but there are lags in the browser.
There is also an i7-2600 at work. I haven't tested it. but worked. According to Aida, such a percentage shows 43886 parrots and this is plausible - the computer just flies.
And laptops aren't tuned for performance at all. Their goal is to last longer on battery. (About RoG and the like is a separate topic)
If you want to play and work at home - take a PC with the maximum number of cores.
If you want to be mobile - take a laptop with a small screen and a weak processor.
If you want to be mobile and at the same time play - any whim for your money.)
Such things. )
