Constantly losing VNC connection when remotely controlling Mac OS X from under Windows?

On Mac OS X, the Screen Sharing option is enabled for remote desktop sharing. We connect to the Mac from under Windows 7 using TightVNC or RealVNC clients.
If no action is taken in the client window for several minutes, the picture stops updating (freezes) and the connection is lost. No errors are thrown, it just hangs and that's it.
How can I increase the idle timeout or enable some kind of keep-alive?
