Connection test?

There is some kind of application for Windows that checks the availability of an Internet connection, for example, it “pings Google” with a certain frequency and writes a log when it breaks.

Windows 7 (Vista seems to be the same, and Piggy seems to be the same) and older, it itself checks the availability of the Internet, and if there is no access, the icon with the monitor next to the clock is displayed with an exclamation mark or a cross. Why else?

I had a similar need. In general, this is done by MRTG, as I understand it, something like a standard in networks and server systems.
There is PRTG for Windows, very functional, builds graphs and collects statistics on sensors in the background, has more than 200 sensors to track. Russian interface and free version limited to 100 sensors.
