Connecting an external graphics card to a laptop?

Laptop asus x541 series 2016, i7 6500u, 16gb RAM 2133 ddr4, but integrated graphics (hd 520)
As we could understand from the processor, its heat dissipation is limited.
I wanted to connect an external video card and I seem to be doing everything right, but the laptop does not start at startup! (
As it turned out, if I connect to vga, if there is a signal, there is no signal on dvi on the same video card. There are no
switches or other sockets on the monitor, if I pump through the computer everything works fine.Vga would be enough for me, but the problem is that on all video cards that you can’t take everywhere now, dvi and hdmi. What
could be the problem, I have only 2 options, either the motherboard or the riser( adapter to an external video card)
How to find out what the problem is?
