There are more options:
Specialist - Leading Specialist - Expert.
Specialist - Leading Specialist - System Architect.
Specialist - Leading Specialist - Analyst-Consultant (real)
Specialist - Leading Specialist - Head of Department - Head of Department - Director of Department - Member of the Board
Specialist - Leading Specialist - Owner of his own business.
For all these three, I have excellent examples of people I know.
The first three are getting at a level (or more) than their leaders. An exciting job for many years for those who do not like leadership.

A career should take place in the head, not in the labor. And then later the chiefs can only read from a piece of paper.

I know a lot of IT specialists who, after the initial periods, became managers, by the way, programmers always make awesome money-oriented businessmen!))) The main thing is to catch the moment when the tower has not yet been demolished!))

After the head, they usually open their own company and already directors in it. Some stay both there and there, so there are enough adventures.

Well, first of all, it all depends on the specific place of work, and if you work in one company for a long time, then you can “grow”. More often it happens that leaving one company in a position, for example, a system administrator, you come to another in the same position, and continue to grow there. In addition, as "bondbig" already said, there are many options. Some organizations generally have one position for an IT specialist - System Administrator, and this person is both an enikey and a technical director and a 1C programmer at once - and this really happens if the salary suits.
So I think that a “typical career”, as it was asked in the question, simply does not exist - you can only talk about any specific case, depending on the office, employee, salary ...

I have a first degree in mathematics, then a master's degree in IT. Worked as a developer. Patom was taken to a chic company as an economist (because of the mathematical faculty). So where life will throw - it is not known.

Remembering Lenin, it seems - how many languages you know, so many times you are a person.
I have many good and smart admins who have risen to manage their own business - when you grow up and understand how it works - you know all the stages and can easily manage, moving not to detailed tasks, but to managing the general policy - of a department, department, company - and help optimize costs of the appropriate level, understand who the staff is and what technologies the business needs.
For example, I don’t see myself in management at all - I have a support-enikeishik layer and a leader who sets tasks, and I grow as a technical specialist - I solve problems in a way that is more convenient for me.
