Can Wordpress sites be migrated by file replacement?

Hello! I need to open a subdomain on my own site where I can try new design and other features in the future.
Now I plan to work on reworking the template and some elements there. Question: Will the site work if I replace the files on the main domain with files from the subdomain? In other words, will everything be available, will it work correctly with the database? Thanks in advance.

wp-config.php stores database settings. Well, the template name is stored in the database.
Also in the database there will be paths, for example, to pictures on a subdomain.
