Can I connect an additional monitor to my laptop?

I want to buy an additional monitor for my laptop (for watching movies and videos), but I don’t know if my laptop will pull.
The laptop is quite old and weak on Intel Celeron and 2 GB of RAM.
Is it worth buying or is it better not to and the laptop will not pull?
