Why doesn't the external DVI monitor work with my MacBook Pro 2013?

Bought an HDMI to DVI adapter. The LG 23EA63T monitor comes with a DVI cable. I connect through an adapter to a macbook. Macbook even sees it (System settings - monitors - location - there are 2 monitors here), but "No signal, check connection" blinks on the monitor.
What to do in this case and how to make it work?
