I'm just doing this for the first time and I want to protect myself from unnecessary expenses.

Depends on the free hosting - not everyone allows you to bind other people's domains to them (and many allow only for money).

That's what they usually do. For a domain, as a rule, you only need to specify the address of the DNS server, such as ns1.aa.superhosting.ru.
What you need to register, see the host.
The domain will be linked within 24 hours.
