Can developing a mobile application still bring income to a developer with an idea?

I have an idea and the only sound way I can see to monetize it is to sell it as a mobile app. But I hear from everywhere that everything is bad and such a strategy has not worked for a long time, soon everything will be in the form of SPA / PWA clients of large services, where there is a more thoughtful monetization policy. Tell me, who is somehow connected with mobile development and / or tried to roll out their applications, how are things going?
ps Well, details like iOS-first or immediately cross-platform, I'm also interested.
pps Of course, I want to implement the idea, but still not guaranteed to go "in milk" with my efforts.

If you have a niche application, in some narrow specific segment, aimed at a solvent audience. That is quite possible. You are looking for a competent marketer, order a market research, then a prototype and a soft-lunch. Calculate how much you get from the user minus the cost of attracting. If you go to the plus, you scale, you launch fully. IMHO so.

Until you try, you won't know.

Make a plan.
A very detailed plan.
Describe the site, application, how you will promote it.
Give your texts to competent text builders
Launch MVP.
Try to find a competent seller.
After the first financial results, look for investors.
It is quite realistic if you are ready to work for 5-6 months only on your own resources.

There is only one answer - try it.
Don't try, you won't know.
And suddenly it really "takes off"?
