And the FTDI USB-To-Serial adapter:

Arduino over SPI controls a device that can consume up to 2A. In this connection, an external adapter is needed.

If the duina will be powered only from external power, then only connect GND, TX, RX, DTR to FT, if you want the duina to receive backup power from the computer, then connect 5V through a Schottky diode. Do not connect the power without a diode - you can burn out the USB port on the computer.
