Can a laptop be connected as an external drive?

Is there a way to connect usb to usb? To mount a partition or image to a port directly from the system on a laptop, connect it to the client and not worry about flash drives and disks. Perhaps you need to dig into android systems that at least show their fs when connected?
Even if there is no answer, please advise where to look.

Yes, you can! If you have Apple laptops! But not via usb, but via firewire or thunrerbolt.
