Calling a modal window from a button that is loaded by ajax?

In general, there is a button that is loaded by ajax. This button is used to call a modal window. The window itself is not loaded by ajax, but simply hangs in the footer. When you click on the button, a darkened background appears, but the modal does not call. What's stopping you?
