By what principle is the source ip address selected when sending an ICMP request (cisco router)?

The Cisco router, when sending an ICMP request without specifying source interface/ip, selects an IP from the list of local interfaces. So, what is the principle of choosing this IP?

It determines the route to the destination and takes its IP of the network through which the first hop is to be made.
