Black screen after installing Ubuntu Server. What's wrong?

Ubuntu Server is what the server is for, that it does not have a graphical shell.
Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or Alt-F1, I don't remember exactly) will open the console, then sudo apt-get install ssh and then connect via Putty.
If you want a graphical shell, then sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop .
