Recommend a 3G USB modem to send SMS messages from the server

Good afternoon!

The server is running Debian squeeze.
You need a well-researched and reliable device.

Also, please share proven documentation on setting up the device.

PS Why am I looking for a USB modem? “It just doesn’t need external power and special cables.

Huawei e173 works fine, both through AT commands and through gnokii.

If you have access to the network, then I think it will be more convenient to use the services of sending SMS (for example, http://sms24x7.ru/ ). But, here the weak link will be the need for access to the Internet.

Tested huawei 1550 on ubuntu. Everything is great just hangs often. If not spam, then it is cheaper and more stable to use a web service

If the server is in the data center, then there is a chance that the connection there will be ... bad. If there is a connection at all.
And if the server does not have an internal USB port, then the modem can be accidentally torn off from the external USB port or simply “lost”.
SMS service in such cases is more reliable.
