The fact is that in the same macbook models but released in different years, batteries can be different! In your case, only the A1321 battery is suitable, as you correctly identified.

They exchanged it for another without any problems - everything is fine.
And here the question is not for the seller, but rather for the quality of the batteries. It is better to buy from a seller who can exchange for another one without extra costs.
If I had an order from ebay, I would hardly have bothered if the seller asked me to send the goods back for analysis at my expense.
