A large site has been backed up in this way every day without problems for almost 4 years (the PostgreSQL base and user-generated content, in total, just a little less than 150GB).
As far as I understand from the tags, you need to backup the database (because the code is in the repository for sure), so what's wrong with cron + ssh + mysqldump + scp?
