Are there any sensible free courses where you can improve your English?

Very poor knowledge at the pre-intermediate level, I ran into a problem that now it has become needed. Are there any sensible courses where you can improve your level or is it all a waste and just sit with a book and Google?

I don't know about free ones.
But for good practice, you need a native speaker . And not everyone is suitable. I have come across those who talk a lot, ask little, and do not really point out your mistakes, as a result of profit there is very little.
The best Moscow courses take about 200 rubles per hour. Usually it comes out about 15 thousand per month. In general, this is not much. In 1-2 years, you can rise from scratch to a confident intermediate.
Independently, that is, free of charge, you can also learn - to read, write, work with a dictionary, study grammar. But we must understand that even in the dictionary there are errors, especially with regard to transcription. And some subtleties are nowhere to be found. Because of this, for example, it will be almost impossible to translate a phrase in which all the words seem to be familiar. And vice versa, it will be difficult to build a thought if the carriers do not understand you as you wanted.
