Applied Mathematics and Informatics Program. HSE/ITMO?

Hello. I am finishing 11th grade. I choose universities. I want to enroll in the program "Applied Mathematics and Informatics". But the choice is between two universities. Higher School of Economics or ITMO? The passing score is the same in these universities. I would like to know the opinions of people who studied at both ITMO and HSE. Where will the knowledge most in demand be given? I heard the opinion of people who study at ITMO that there is a large workload at some faculties, and very weak at others, they don’t give sensible knowledge. How are things really?
Entertainment. Are interesting events, competitions and student activities the same? How interesting is university life? They say that there is more communication at ITMO. What about HSE?
Program. The Applied Mathematics and Informatics program at HSE has been developed taking into account the experience of leading universities such as Stanford University (USA), EPFL (Switzerland), as well as the Yandex School of Data Analysis, which has developed one of the strongest educational programs in computer science in Russia . And how good is the program at ITMO? What are the pros, cons?
Teachers . I heard that there are not very good teachers at ITMO. Someone demands a lot, and someone teaches badly. HSE probably doesn't have such problems. Your opinion.
Profession. When you graduate from one or another university, how much will you be in demand? Does what degree matter? Towers or ITMO?
Dormitories.HSE has good dormitories, but they say not so much at IMTO. Lots of noise, drunken students, bad smell, etc. How bad is it? I heard that at ITMO on Vyazemka you can take friends to your place, is it possible at HSE?
What are the chances, upon admission to the HSE, that they will get a hostel in Dubki? How do they settle? If you don't like the place, for example, is it possible to relocate?
other faculties. If someone knows information about other programs, but from the Faculty of Computer Science, I would still like to know the information. (Maybe I’ll choose another program. While in thought, but a guide to the one that I wrote above).
PS In general, a lot of questions, I know. I would like to get as much information as possible. Who can tell more, I will only be glad.

I study at ITMO. 1st course. Specialty - "Applied Mathematics and Informatics". Department of CT - FIT. Yes, this year the passing score was 294, but this is taking into account the fact that there were 120 places. If there weren’t these 20 places (which, by the way, usually didn’t happen until 2016), the passing score would be 300+ or they would have entered at all only one Olympiad. This year I don’t know what the situation will be, I advise you to find out later in the selection committee or on the website.
At ITMO, the specialty "Applied Mathematics and Informatics" is taught in two places: at the faculty of the JNF, which is now being disbanded (it is merged into some other faculty, as far as I understand), and at the aforementioned department of CT. Couples in Algem, Matan and Physics JNF and CT visit together. In all other respects, the difference is VERY significant. While JNF goes deeper into pure mathematics, CT really does things that are very close to programming and mathematics at the same time, but by no means should you think that CT is easier in terms of mathematics. In all plans, CT is more difficult. At the JNF, studies are easier, sessions are easier to pass. As proof, I will cite a fact: students with debts who have not mastered their studies at CT are usually transferred to the JNF.
Entertainment. There is a lot of movement at ITMO as a whole. There are a lot of sports clubs and sections under the ITMO brand. Anything you want, you can find. Even all sorts of exotic things. In general, a wide space. It can be seen that they are really doing this very well. I made a conclusion about this even before entering - there is a lot of information about it on the ITMO website. They also write in public VK. HOWEVER, the combination of all these things and opportunities with studying for CT is a very rare case, out of the ordinary. If you do, you will understand for yourself whether you will succeed or not, but I do not advise you to focus on this now and hope that there will be free time. On CT, only people who are extremely gifted / immensely passionate about subject areas / insanely hardworking and purposeful (and the goal should preferably be one - to finish CT) survive to the end. In order not to be unfounded, I'll give you the numbers. According to information available to us, the first-year students, in the second year of the originally recruited 110 people, 45 remained. The rest transferred / dropped out. It’s very difficult to survive here, so you can’t doubt that it’s not yours, you can’t procrastinate in any way - there is no time. You have to come here with a purpose.
Program . The program in terms of content is wow. In practice, to master, understand and consolidate in your head at least most of the knowledge that we ideally should know here is a heroic feat and everyday work that does not know the words "entertainment" and "idleness".
teachers. Teachers, of course, world-class, professionals in their field. This is especially true for programming and algorithms. However, this does not mean at all that complex things will be explained to you in simple terms. First of all, I would treat them as candidates and doctors of physical and mathematical sciences, and not as teachers, because they will speak with you in a complex or incomprehensible language about complex things. At most lectures, most of the material presented is not clear to me - I quickly lose the thread of the lecturer's reasoning and wonder how such information can be put in the student's head in an hour and a half of a couple. For me, studying here is one continuous self-education. They won't teach you anything if you don't want to. It is better to prepare for couples, but there is not enough time for this at all. Others may have better perception and thinking abilities. I speak for myself. Let me give you some facts. By the end of the semester, only 1/3 of the flow goes to physics. People here don't even have time for some couples. They can't/don't get enough sleep. A little more than half of them also stop going to Algebra with geometry, but this is mainly due to the fact that information is hard to perceive. It's easier to sit at home and read a textbook. The situation is similar in terms of math. You will lose little if you sit at home and read a textbook, using the lectures of classmates. Self-education. Only. Profession . If you reach the end, you will be in demand wherever you want. The department is listed. Recruiters from Yandex, Mail, Odnoklassniki, etc. come and recruit interns. By the way, they do not come in vain. Every employer appreciates hard work in a person. Here, every first student from the 3rd/4th year satisfies this criterion by 150%.
Dormitories. I don't live there. I know that there are a lot of cockroaches (on Vyazma for sure), there are certain problems with this. But close. In 15-20 minutes walk, like, if you will be on Vyazma. If they settle in the MSG, then you will have to ride the metro, and this is already decent. Most KTshnikov lodge on Vyazma.
Main .
And finally, my main thesis. For a successful and fruitful study, you must have certain personal qualities, which I hope you can name after reading my review. I could write a lot more to you, but these are the details. Here you need to survive and believe that you really need it.

I studied at the specialty "applied mathematics and informatics" at Moscow State University (faculty of the VMK).
He also entered the Moscow State Technical University. Bauman and MEPhI (entered).
What can I say, it's really easy to do. Especially considering the rather free olympiads at universities (Conquer Sparrow Hills, Lomonosov, there was also a Bauman) (which should be going right now), which give advantages for admission (for example, "automatically" 100 USE points in physics). Not necessarily only for residents of the capital - I flew from Siberia to the Lomonosov, but it helped a little with admission. Flying out is hard. They were allowed to retake exams 5 times (however, after the story, when a student complained to the administration that he was not given the sixth retake, they began to allow only two). Learning is also difficult. Math, math and more math. Truth. If you think you'll be coding for days - wow, I counted 14 different math related subjects! Complex theorems, integrals, diffusers - all this you will have in this specialty. Do you really want to come here?
- Entertainment. Univer did not organize too many things. Initiation into students, distribution of free tickets to the theater ... More, to be honest, I don’t remember. We independently (with the help of the headman) organized trips to the cinema, museums (as a group). That is if there is enough time.
- Program. Boring obligatory humanitarian subjects - fundamentals of law, economics, philosophy. Outdated lectures on computers (BESM-6 assembler, ancient PC fundamentals, etc.). I already wrote about the amount of mathematics. Many students simply don't go to lectures, they don't study, but they pass exams normally (you know how).
- Teachers. Most of the teachers are over 60 years old, the young ones are either children of the older generation of teachers, or enthusiasts in their field. Even at Moscow State University they pay frankly little. But they teach well, albeit strictly. I personally have never seen any bribes and other things in all the years.
- Hostels. Almost all hostels are near Moscow State University, maximum 20 minutes on foot. At 1-3 courses, ordinary dorms, 4-6 courses - the main building with a spire. Mostly old rooms with old furniture, but now a new building has been built. It seems that students are now located there .. In short, I don’t know, I lived in an apartment in the suburbs.
- other faculties. the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics is even tougher in terms of mathematics. but they also teach programming.
PS If I could choose now, I would go to the Bauman school, I like to work with equipment, they teach it there. we didn't have a hardware development course at all.
