Anonymity and honesty of VPN service?

There is a "friend" who raised his OpenVPN, offers to use it for free, says that he does not keep logs.
Can you please tell me if he can monitor his users?
If so, what is the maximum amount of information it can collect?
And are there any ways to check for myself what information the VPN collects about me and whether it keeps logs at all.
