[Android] How to turn the screen on/off programmatically

You need to programmatically turn on / off the screen.
In theory, this advice should work: stackoverflow.com/questions/9294917/android-java-turn-screen-off
But for some reason it does not work, just nothing happens, not even errors.
App permissions enabled:
* android.permission.WAKE_LOCK
* android.permission.DEVICE_POWER
