Am I wasting my time by continuing to study at a university I don't like?

In 2020, I entered MathMech at St. Petersburg State University, majoring in Fundamental Informatics and Information Technology. I chose this particular direction because I didn’t know where to go in life further (and I didn’t want to get into the army), and I thought that I would choose a specialization in which I would get a good mathematical base and the basics of the programming craft, because, as I thought, it is these skills that will definitely not make me worse and even help in some other area (after all, everything now is tied to IT and this IT education will not be superfluous). Especially at school, in my spare time, I was fascinated by this very programming (I wrote something for myself + participated in various scientific and technical complexes, etc.) and mathematics as well (although at school it was more like arithmetic, heh).
From the very first classes, I was crazy about the amount of university mathematics that was poured on us in the very first weeks, but I coped with this load and did not experience any strong shocks. But there was also programming, from which I was simply sick (the sharps and the basics of OOP were taught, software development, etc.). It was boring and tedious. In such despondency, I barely passed the session, and now, at the beginning of the new semester, I understand that I don’t want to connect my life with the profession of a programmer, but use programming as an auxiliary tool to the maximum.
But the problem is that I can't find the area where programming would be used as a tool - I don't know in which area I want to work / develop, I don't know who I will work with. I just want to quit.
Bottom line: I don’t know what I want to do, but at the same time I’m not ready to continue my studies, realizing that I can’t leave him (army, hello). In any case, it turns out that I'm wasting precious time (whether it's the army or tired of studying in an unwanted place). What to do?

Learn and don't listen to anyone. Without a diploma, the roads to more or less serious organizations will be closed to you.

I was in your shoes 10 years ago. Although my ancestors threw me into an educational institution due to their own stupidity, and I did not smear snot on the forums. I waited until my 18th birthday, took the docks, and went to look for what I want to do in life. Never regretted.

army, hello

Yes, cool: "I'm afraid of losing a year in the army, so I'll lose 4 years in university, the right to receive a bachelor's degree on my own taxes, and then I will go to the army anyway."
Great plan, Walter. Just * if I understand correctly. Reliable *, like a Swiss watch.

PS St. Petersburg State University is a fucking university, but it has a lot of shortcomings, but if you have the desire and skill, you can get around them. While you are taking this place, some other dude is dreaming of taking it. Don't be a bastard, if you feel that it doesn't suit you - release it for someone who really needs it.

You are wasting your time in college.
Quit college and mind your own business.
Believe me.
Don't waste 5 years of your life

Yes, you're wasting your time. While studying in grades 10-11, I realized that there is no point in going further to study, modern education in our country does not know how to value, especially in the field of IT. (An exception is online school-universities like geekbrains). Nowadays, such institutions are of great benefit, where you can get real knowledge and skills in this area, though you need to invest money. I don’t have such an opportunity, so I chose self-development, it’s much slower, but I like it, and for me this is a weighty argument not to go to get state. education and get a crust.

Do you have enough head not to be afraid of the tower - and you whine just because you have shitty computer science teachers?
Yes, it would be nice for you to get into the barracks for a week. To fall out of the blissful world of the Eloi to the Morlocks, to be among those who do not live with their heads at all. It would be nice to adjust the priorities.
Well, or you can, for example, fly in for 15 days for a test ... there will be approximately the same circle for communication and comparison with the life that makes you so sick.

Imagine yourself as a job seeker in 10 years. Let them look for a new employee in some promising company, and before the eyes of HR there is a pack of almost identical resumes with identical salary expectations, but all applicants have a higher education in their life path, but you do not. Who will be invited to the interview last?
No one has long been interested in the content and quality of the higher education you received, but the very fact of not passing it is a kind of marker, a signal that a person could not cope with this education. And this is not in his favor. You can scold this situation, you can try to change it, but at the moment it is exactly like that.
Imagine that life is a role-playing game, and in / about is such a quest, an important boring quest that gives an achievement that speeds up the passage to the exclusive game locations of the next levels. Yes, they can then be obtained with additional efforts, but it will not be very easy and not given to everyone.
You can always go and leave, it does not take much time, but then it will be more difficult to return, so carefully weigh the pros and cons. Maybe you just better change the direction of education? Switch to another university? Get a part-time education?
It is rather strange to be surprised at the complexity of mathematics at a specialized faculty in one of the country's leading universities. But I don't understand the claims about programming at all. The level of programming in a mathematical university is not sky-high at all. If you started having problems from studying such a simple and important topic as OOP, then this claim is no longer against the university. This is a claim to you as a future programmer. If you cannot master the basics under the guidance of a teacher, then self-education in this area will cause you no less problems. Therefore, I recommend thinking about whether you really want to choose the path of a programmer?
And be careful about the advice of experienced advisers from this site. Most of them are different from the average techies. They are clearly better able to educate themselves, learn new technologies, and find answers to their questions. Of course, it is not so difficult for many of them to master complex topics on their own, advance professionally, and pass an interview in a decent company for a good position, but this level is not available to everyone.
And I, like everyone else, look at everything from the height of my level. When I say that programming in a mathematical university does not shine with complexity, I am talking first of all about my experience in this direction. At the same time, I myself saw how even students who studied better than me experienced difficulties with this very programming.
So do not rush to take my advice as a guide to action. In any case, you will have to make a decision yourself, but it should not be taken hastily.

I also studied as a programmer, received a diploma with almost all triples. Never used, but warms the soul.
I was also disappointed that they taught at the institute, some of the knowledge was only useful. And what we were taught there for 4 years, now you can read any book in a month or watch a couple of sensible lessons on the topic you need and all knowledge gaps are filled. That is, all 4 years can be filled in six months or a year of intensive study at home (judging by myself).
But in any case, I don’t regret that I unlearned, because back in the 4th year I got an internship with my teacher (he has his own web studio), now I’m already a confident middle, a good salary for the region (yes, not Moscow, but we have city, not everyone receives such a salary).
In short, learn .......
Life is a complicated thing, come in handy.

Try to work part-time at a construction site or in a similar specialty, where salaries are paid for physical labor, on which you can more or less live with dignity, it seems to me that a love for mental work at a computer in the office will appear. You won’t earn much on vacancies such as a taxi driver or a courier, but you won’t really have enough money in 10-20 years, and it will be difficult to return to IT or another highly paid office specialty, and most likely there will be only two options left either to survive on a small salary, or go to a construction site, etc. specialty.

When I read the question, I immediately understood what I would find in the answers :)
Well, apart from the normal advice of course. Other schoolboys will certainly come running here and will squeal loudly about the fact that the tower is not needed, and how they perfectly settled in life without it. True, usually when you start asking in more detail, it turns out "and not rubles, but bucks, and not a hundred but a thousand, and did not win, but lost."
I can advise you to go to the army :) I don’t know, however, how similar this current kindergarten for overgrown people is to the army, I served in the Soviet Army :) but if it is at least half similar and gives at least half of that effect - go costs. Brains will fall into place. When you return, you can already decide what to do.

hello, we've arrived.
How did you think? stupid lessons at school, but at the university they will give you your own laboratory and a million rubles for your research projects?
Slope away from the army, transfer to a postcard. Learn IT by yourself. The best option now is to get hold of the crust under the pillow, and learn. Remote control will not last a lifetime

After reading all the comments, I think that all Russian universities, universities and all education in the current Rashka are a complete bottom.
Yes, even Moscow State University, and St. Petersburg universities with universities where fools and other great programmers came out, are not particularly proud of their diploma lately. I have not heard that at least someone who studied at a university / university became better than a self-taught programmer. Today, many companies want to see EXPERIENCE, PROJECTS, a flexible mind, and so on.
Since I have not lived in Russia since birth, in Israel where I lived, almost 80-90% of programmers without higher education in such companies as a software engineer, software developer, software engineer, embedded engineer and so on.
My friends work at IBM, Intel, AMD, Nvidia without a higher education, but everyone has a head, they have experience starting with a web developer.
These are people who do not know 1 programming language, but know 2, 3 and even 5.
Go live, walk, study for yourself. Today you can succeed even become a successful entrepreneur without higher education, it's all about you, your desire to develop.
Higher education gives only a circle of friends and forms some knowledge, but since many dean's offices in Russian universities are typical homeless people with no experience in IT, economics, etc., there is no point in studying further there.
