When I edit icons in illustrator, they often stop working on the site. Before editing, everything works fine, when I change and save a little, the icon simply does not appear.

It depends on how you edit and how you save afterwards.
After editing, make sure that all elements are merged into a single shape (in the case of a monochrome outline icon) or merged as much as possible (in the case of multicolor graphics).
And then export through File > Export for Screens... > and there already select in the Format field - SVG.
