Adaptive, responsive, I understand correctly?

Hello, I want to clarify the concept for myself: adaptive and responsive.
As I understand it, an adaptive site means the use of breakpoints for various devices (768 ipad, 414 iphone 6+, etc.) and the layout adapts only based on these breakpoints, and if the layout can break, let's start at 879px - it doesn't matter, the main thing is that everything is fine at the necessary breakpoints?
By responsive, I mean that you need to customize the layout completely so that it doesn’t break anywhere, and that they say this is the very essence of a responsive site - it will be shown well even on screens of 999px, or 666 px - at the same time when simply adaptive will depend on key breakpoints ( 768px - everything is fine, but let's start at 799 - everything is broken )
Thanks in advance.

These are different concepts.
Responsive - only adapts to screen resolution.
And responsive - changes the size of text, buttons and other elements depending on the device.
For example, on the same screen resolution of 1920x1080, a responsive site may look different if it is opened from a laptop, desktop computer, or TV, despite the same resolution.
