It would be great, but, I'm afraid most of the first-year students will not pull it ... If in parallel with the introduction to programming only (maybe from the second semester).
In MIT itself, by the way, there are two introductory programming courses:
1) Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs
2) Introduction to Computer Science and Programming
The second one starts in a couple of weeks on EDx. Subscribed to see how it all works...
As for me, the book is interesting, but very far from reality. It's definitely worth reading, but learning the basics... The best I've seen is a physics and technology textbook: Programming Practice and Theory (http://acm.mipt.ru/twiki/bin/view/Info/AlgorithmsBook)
