A separate site for mobile or adaptive?

The question arose, there is a very large online store (50,000 per day).
We started to adapt it for mobile phones, it turns out a mess of tags, classes, etc.
Now we think it might be worth sawing a completely new site?
On the other hand, mobile visits are only 5%

You can read smashing magazine (Eng.)
The article suggests that m-subdomains are a thing of the past. It is proposed to determine the user's platform (PC, mobile, tablet) and issue different content for them. It describes the technology and how it can be organized.

I think opinions will be divided here, and each part will have its own arguments.
My opinion is that in some cases the site still needs a separate mobile version. Simply due to a different context of use. A significant part is reborn into something convenient simply with the help of adaptive layout.
I think that there is no universal recipe - you need to carefully describe scenarios, contexts of use, sketch interfaces, transition structure, outline functionality, and only then draw a conclusion whether adaptive layout will cope with the task or not.

I think that it is stupid to make one adaptive site for highly visited resources. It is better to make a division by device and use redirects. So the code will be cleaner and more extensible. The site will be easier to test, easier to debug, cheaper to maintain. It will not be overloaded with a bunch of unnecessary scripts and styles, it will work faster.
Fully responsive design is suitable for small blogs, landing pages, light business cards. In this case, I would recommend partial adaptability: for example, mobile version and desktop tablet, or desktop and mobile tablet.

All the same, adaptation for mobile devices is needed, because. your buyer, having found you on the Internet, standing somewhere far from WiFi, will not climb into the appstore and download 10 mb of your application via gprs. It is easier for him to go through the web version.
