A bit about vpn technology. Is openvpn secure?

Hello.
Tell or give Russian-language articles on openvpn. The internals don't bother me much as I'm just a regular user. Therefore questions for the most part "explain to a teapot".
And a few specific questions:
- As I understand it, openvpn makes almost the mesh itself, only with a remote computer. That is, it can be configured at the router level?
- Can some applications, such as skype, bypass the VPN? (roughly understanding the technology, I mean that they cannot.)
- Can the browser, for example, using JavaScript, learn something specific about the user (ip address, or some data about my computer, except for localization and resolution).
- Is it possible to configure a specific computer in such a way that when it is turned on, all connections go through vpn? (elementary os, based on ubuntu 12.04)

If you need complete reliability, there is a solution with installing a virtual machine, which is not given access to the physical network at all. The VPN connection is raised by means of the host machine, and the virtual machine sees only it.
But that's for the paranoid.
As I understand it, openvpn makes almost the grid itself, only with a remote computer. That is, it can be configured at the router level?
If the router understands the openvpn protocol, then yes, you can.

Clarification on the 3rd point: you can only extract the IP of the last node from the chain along which the packet passed
