3G modem distributes Internet via WiFi to 10 computers. Why does the Internet work much better when using OpenVPN?

I am in Ecuador. VPN server in New York. When connected via WiFi with OpenVPN enabled over TCP, the Internet starts working much faster.
10 machines are constantly connected to the modem. If all users simultaneously load the connection, then the Internet does not work for anyone but me. Why is this happening?
