Wiring diagrams for image encoder-decoder?

Hello.
Interested in examples of implementations on microcontrollers of image encoders or decoders. Well, or at least just encoders or decoders (preferably in C). Maybe I googled wrong, but I didn't find any information at all. Please advise books where the element base for these things is written (what encoders / decoders are, how they differ, how to implement). In general, there is a desire (and a need :D) to program an image encoder.
