Will there be a game that will stir up the world again?
At any time, the world was conquered by simple games. Not primitive, but simple. As a rule, they did not impress in the first place, using new technologies, graphics or anything super new and inaccessible.
Rather, they were the result of a very deep thought process, which was expressed in very simple and understandable things, conditionally: start, and you will immediately understand what to do.
For me, at all times, such toys were:
- Dizzy
- Lode Runner (and in general 80% of Spectrum games)
- Another World / Vikings / Prince of Persia / Dangerous Dave
- Doom / Duke Nukem
and somehow ... everything ends.
And you?

In my opinion, Space Rangers deserves to stand among the outstanding games.
World of goo, Scary girl. Although, you are right, there were almost no standing games.
But what about Heroes of Might and Magic III? Mortal Kombat?
Nowadays, "addictive" games have taken on a slightly different look: they are either online (WoW, Lineage, Ragnarok, Eve, PW) or on mobile platforms (Cut the rope, Angry birds).
Worms Armageddon. I still regularly play various schemes and am generally a fan. The game is still supported, with patches coming out (thanks to cybershadow ), mods for WormKit , like RubberWorm and ProjectX .
So for me, this is exactly it - a technologically simple game for all time.
And so, indie games are released regularly, which really attract the attention of the broad masses, about which much has been written above. So the question "why the games are not the same" in general is more of a philosophical nature.
And yes, I hope that Diablo 3 still excites the world.
It's strange that no one mentioned Dungeon Keeper, because all god sims came from him, at least he was one of the first. I'm still waiting for part 3
at all times they say that it used to be better)))) before at least there was something to play “when there was nothing to do”, but now they somehow don’t touch games ...
my favorite game was (and is) Beyoud good and evil before so far no one has been compared with it))
and now, well, except perhaps a puzzle - SpaceChem
By the way, everyone remembers the wonderful Sega Mega Drive and the simple but addictive game Road Rush. I guess I'm not the only one looking for books with codes, etc. before.
oh, there was a time... :)
The strongest impression was Half-Life, which was shown to me in my childhood by my father's system administrator at work.
Imperishable number one is Worms Armageddon. The undisputed leader in replayability.
Half-Life 2 impressed with the elaboration of maps and graphics,
so I don’t agree with the fact that all brilliant games are simple.
It is very disappointing that the quality of graphics rested on man-hours and iron set-top boxes.
Let's see, of course, what Battlefield 3 will show...
Fallout 1-2, Arcanum, Diablo 2… and… and… and that's it, you're right)
Beyond Divinity, Baldur's Gate, Sacred, Icewind Dale were less revolutionary, but also interesting and enjoyable… When I decided to play Titan Quest, I was spinning and vomited from what was happening on the screen.
Well, CS, for obvious reasons, has revolutionized. HL itself bypassed me, only played on the grid.
New and interesting games are constantly appearing. It's just that before the trees were taller, the grass was greener, and more dense. For example, I enjoyed playing Fallout 3 / New Vegas on PC.
Like to play. Previously, different variations of what was happening on the screen were new (oh, first-person view, oh third!, but the strategy! - wow!) - that's why they were very impressive - that's why it seemed that they were the best you can imagine!
As a child is surprised at what he sees for the first time, so you were surprised, now you have already become callous.
According to the graphic component, I divide the games into 4 eras, each of which amazes at the first touch to it.
1. 2D (arkanoid, pacman, dandy games), 2. pseudo-2D (Diablo, Heroes 3), 3. 3D (first saw partial 3D in Emperor: Battle for Dune, then GTA3), 4. appearance of "realistic" physics and “portals” in the game (for portals, it’s logically Portal, but before that I was struck by some part of Quake, where portals were not trigger objects, but you could already shoot and throw grenades through them).
As for the development of the gameplay itself, I am only for the development of new technical capabilities. The closest thing I see is the use of motion capture (like Kinect), for example, to "look" inside the monitor / TV screen. So far, such an operating time is only in the process of running in, game manufacturers are only trying themselves in this.
Of course, without changing existing genres, new developments will seem inferior.
To the question "whether it will appear" I will answer "definitely yes." The only question is "when?"
I think it can be games with “augmented reality” or games that use a virtual reality helmet and maybe tactile gloves, which are definitely available to the masses. Only such serious steps in terms of technology can excite the old-timers.
In general, the 4 eras I have named should be added by the fifth + a new genre should appear = we will get such a hit that will really be able to excite the world.
aaa!!! you forgot super mario bros. :)
at the moment I haven’t found any worthy games on my device (LG P500) (either lags, or I don’t like graphics / gameplay / etc ...)
Recently, I started replaying “Tomb Raider: Legend” on PC, and many games from NES on mobile (mario, tiny toon: adventures, chip'n dale: rescue rangers).
Pelevin "Prince of the State Planning Commission" - Prince in Persia , on i286 (the dandy was not so interesting)
Half Life took away half of my life :)
Gothic took the second half
I would add the original X-COM games to your list. I remember how tedious it was.
I still play Quake 3, it's also an excellent game, in general, the Quake series up to part 4 is a masterpiece.
Not simple, but definitely exciting the world was the game GTA (for me, Vice City).
Transport Tycoon, in the openttd version so far, and SimCity, especially the 4th version) I still play both from time to time)
So is there a preference in the genre/technologies, or is the novelty of the idea and gameplay more important?
Diablo 3 will appear soon - so let's see
, but from what they called in the topic - nothing reaches the level of even the first dooms
I recommend the series "South Park - You're Getting Old" to understand why there have been no good games for so many years
For some reason, I remembered about "3D action, the essence is this ..."
Portal - Action. High-quality implementation of a simple idea of portals.
Time Shift - Shooter. Time management (for example, going back in time). It’s a pity that you can’t go back far, but the very possibility, even for a second, changes the gameplay very much.
The concept of “now” blurs for a couple of seconds, and the game starts to look more like a strategy, where the issue is in resources, namely, the time management scale.
X3 - Space shooter. Just a high-quality implementation of the space epic.
*You can rob cows, or rob those who rob cows.
Home Planet - Space shooter. Terrible control, but the first toy where I met the real physics of space, with inertia, there are no restrictions for overclocking. Explodes the brain with the difficulty of calculating trajectories for rapprochement.
*For example: Distance 100 km, radius of destruction: 20 km. enemies are advancing from the (conditionally) south, at a speed of 8 km / h in a group. Your ship has twice the acceleration of theirs, and they start to slow down to approach a target near you. Your goal is to intercept them along the way. To do this, you need to accelerate to a quarter of the way, and then turn around and accelerate away from them in order to reach the same speed with them.
*Completely changes the idea of space combat.
WarZone 2100 - Strategy. Terrible graphics, but in terms of complexity, the number of elements of the research tree (about one and a half thousand) and the number of options for military equipment that is obtained from the combination of different components is unrivaled. Combat strategy worked out in detail. There are both radars for artillery, and radars for determining the radars of alien artillery, and something else related to the anti-radar system for aircraft. Haven't figured it out yet.
DistantWorlds - Space strategy. Terrible graphics and a limited set of micro (behavior) features for ships and bases, but in scale (up to 50,000 space objects, from asteroids to black holes and nebulae), the best of its kind global space strategies in my opinion. A full-fledged strategy, there is an autopilot for individual control areas, if you turn on everything, the computer will play itself, but in terms of micro, you have to do something manually. For example, a warship equipped with a cargo hold and a gas collector can only collect fuel from a gas giant manually.
Each of these games fired my imagination.
But if you answer the question in your formulation, then the answer is unlikely to suit you.
What most people like, gourmets usually don't like.
P.S. On the list are games that make you think, not those that give you a world to hide and live in.
And I want Boogerman from Sega to be re-released on a mobile platform - a crazy toy with humor and various levels.
What I really liked at one time, but not listed above:
The thread has slipped into a list of "who likes what games."
But if we talk about “the games that stirred up the world”, then ... with all due respect to them and the time spent on them, I would not say that all the games on your list belong to it. Doom - applies. Prince of Persia and Duke Nukem - maybe. But all the rest are very doubtful ...
At the same time, not to say that "Angry Birds did not stir up the world" would be complete nonsense. Minecraft definitely. Counter-Strike, StarCraft, WoW - they played half the planet. Team Fortress 2, together with Steam (feeding each other), turned online gaming upside down, and Team Fortress 2's creative-machine community is comparable to that of Halo. The Sims is a worldwide hype.
