Will sound quality degrade when headphones are connected to a monitor?

I want to buy a microphone and headphones, but the audio output is broken in the laptop and only 1 usb remains with the keyboard and mouse, so usb headphones are not an option.
The laptop is connected to the monitor, which also has a 3.5 jack.
The monitor itself is connected via hdmi.
Will the sound be worse for some reason than if I connected the headphones directly to the laptop?
If so, then I'll buy an external sound card and connect headphones + a microphone to it.

The monitor usually has its own DAC. Naturally the cheapest. In laptops, there MAY be a DAC that will be minimally better. but most likely the same. So the sound will be + - the same.
But what is there that the sound will be bad, you are unlikely to notice the difference
