In general, I once stopped on this article , switching my full attention to working with the OS for tasks for life / work.
For children at home Winda :) Parental control and more! For me and my wife Mac. In work, everything depends on the tasks and the environment.
The current assembly of Elementary OS is built on the Ubuntu 14.04 package base with its modifiable graphical shell and a set of various pre-installed programs. It's beautiful, but there are some uncomfortable things. For myself, I installed it at home (browser, media, games in Steam), and used it for about a year, then I broke it and I'm not in a hurry to install it yet. I'm waiting for a new build on a new package base, already on April 16, but the truth is that the developers are not in a hurry at all. For work, nevertheless, Ubuntu is more convenient for me. As an inexperienced user, I advise you to immediately use it, since most of the answers to your questions will be easily googled, and this way you will better understand the rich inner world of Linux.
Gnome, KDE, Xfce, Mint, Cinnamon.
