If other hosts have the same mask, no problem. The addressee is reachable locally, get it.
When communicating on a subnet, no gateway is used at all.
Actually, the mask is needed for this - to determine whether it is necessary to go directly to another host, or contact the gateway.
If the mask of both hosts is configured so that they will consider each other in the same subnet, then a gateway is not needed.
