Will 32 GB work where 16 is indicated?

There is a mini-system unit OptiPlex 990. The specification about the RAM says "Memory3 Up to four DIMM slots; Non-ECC dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM, up to 16GB". The motherboard has 4 slots, but as far as I know the Intel® Q67 Express Chipset supports 32GB of RAM. I put there 4 x 8GB (all identical), the BIOS sees it, the OS (FreeBSD) sees it. There were spontaneous freezes tightly, during a regular shutdown / reboot of the OS, i.e. at some stage, apparently then - when the power should have been turned off, for some reason it does not turn off. Bios was old, like A7, updated to A20. Everything also sees the memory and OS and BIOS. The crash hasn't happened yet.
1. Can there be such hangs from exceeding the allowable amount of memory?
2. Will there be problems using all this memory?
3. Can I somehow check or test point 2?
