Third-level domains are historically named by protocol/purpose (the most commonly used now are FTP, NS, SMTP/mx, IMAP, and POP3). Since the World Wide Web is not synonymous with HTTP, the first term was used.
What is a third-level domain? It's just a name, whatever I want, that's what I write. The Internet is full of various services, www is just one of them. Instead of www.nichego.net, nothing will stop me from writing zadnica.nichego.net - and everything will work, except for some butthurt when typing :)
