Why replace doesnotexist with a 404 error?

By default, when we try to call a page that doesn't exist, we get an error saying doesnotexist. Why do programmers change it to 404? Is there any practical benefit to this? Or is it just such an agreement?

Because it displays information for debugging, which is not desirable for users to see.
