Why rent a dedicated server?

Hello, for what purposes do they mainly rent dedicated servers on hetzner and similar sites, except for many visited sites?

  • Historically, before the advent of VPS / VDS, as an alternative to shared hosting with full control over the server (root) and its settings.
When choosing a dedicated server, take care of the fault tolerance of your service in case of equipment failure so that the service does not remain offline while the hoster is looking for a replacement component.
Cloud providers are not completely immune from this either (after all, they have the same hypervisors on some equipment), but it is assumed that they do live migration from problematic nodes.
I saw a lot of topics from dedicated-providers in the vein "scoundrels, I hate it when you change my component, my business is idle, I'm losing $ 12,000 per hour!".
The question is, if the service is so profitable and the losses are so unacceptable, why couldn’t it be invested in at least minimal fault tolerance, instead of relying on the mythical eternal uptime of just one piece of iron?...

1) Hosting restrictions.
Far from any software (languages, databases, redis, servers, especially something of your own...) can be installed on hostings.
2) Through VNC it turns out like a virtual machine. Example: a MacBook costs 50,000, a powerful laptop capable of running a virtual machine with a hackintosh is also 30,000-50,000, and a VPS with OS X costs only 3,000 per month, + the Internet is very fast for the same amount. For a designer, it may not be kamilfo (screen resolution, graphics brakes with poor Internet speed), but for a freelance developer for Mac and iOS, this option is the most cost-effective, while there are few orders.
