Why nickel in transistors?

I needed a KP303V transistor for a DI box. There are 2 of them in the chip and dip, one transistor is nickel, and the second transistor is simple. How are they different and where can I read about it?

nickel specifically refers to transistors a little less than nothing, specifically in this case it
"simply" has gold-plated legs - they are easier to solder
and "nickel" is a shiny nickel-plated case
