Why is Wordpress so popular?

I have been interested in one question for a long time - surfing the expanses of freelance exchanges I often stumble upon orders in which it is necessary to perform various manipulations with Wordpress.
But the very structure of Wordpress, frankly, is very inconvenient for these tasks. Why is Wordpress so often chosen for projects, because in theory it is a CMS for a blog and not for everything?

I have long been interested in one question - surfing the expanses of the modern world, I often stumble upon people who carry xphone with them.
But from a technical point of view xphone, frankly, leaves much to be desired. Why so often people, especially young people, choose xphone as their phone, because xphone is supposed to be for some_one and not for everyone?
Now seriously:
0. Name a free cms with the same number of plugins
1. Name a free cms with the same number of themes (free / premium)
2. From the first two it follows that since there are so many of them, it means that despite all your personal opinion about the essence and structure of Wordpress, its architecture allows you to implement everything you need, and quickly enough; his idea of filters and actions allows you to inject into almost any process - from saving system options to rendering the appearance, making it very flexible to extensions and modifications.
3. Name cms with entry threshold lower than Wordpress?
4. Name a free cms, with the same frequency of version updates (in order to increase the convenience, security of the system as a whole), the ease of rolling these updates, such a large community, etc.
well, the last nail
5. Name cms, with the price of maintenance is cheaper, but the number of ready to accompany more?
I'm really interested .. which cms who else can compete _in a complex_ and not on individual issues, with what is written above?
Apparently the price / quality ratio of Wordpress is currently higher than its competitors.

I don't find anything special in WP. Trite, fast, and cheap. A huge number of CMS is in many ways better. To this we will add a herd effect.

Wordpress is old, very old, superstar as they say. Only those who were not interested in CMS do not know about its existence. And over the years, people have planed solutions for any color. Also, any student will be able to create a home page on its basis, and customers appreciate this platform for the fact that you can cheaply and cheerfully make a website for yourself. Well, their admin panel is not as miserable as that of Joomla.

Often WP is suitable for the tasks at hand. But here I have one client. At the very beginning of our cooperation, he already had a website on WP. And when it was necessary to make serious improvements (finish products, order forms, etc.), I asked him the question "why WP? After all, we have a too custom task and we will have to cut a lot, and this is worse than writing a site from scratch (fortunately, with an abundance of frameworks, this is not difficult and quite fast), tailored to our goals. His answer shocked me. "Everyone says WP is good. Why? I don't know. It's just what everyone says." However, he does not use it at all and does not know how to do it. He even asks us to rename the rubric. And we have to innovate and invent bicycles instead of the normal use of some Zend with a doctrine.

because "choose" often means "somewhere I heard about %cms% and it seems to be nothing"

Because it is a great CMS and you can implement almost everything on it and pretty quickly. I don’t even remember free analogues. Personally, I would move from WP not only to Bitrix. I'm personally drawn to good data from the search engine optimization side.

Why only for the blog? For a blog, this is only part of it. The other is the same static pages.
Excellent visual editor. Versioning. Photo work. Photogalley. Tons of plugins....
Everything is pretty modern.
Popularity is like magic. Successful or not. And you can always scold it, please. Only popularity from swearing does not change ...

Obviously, for the same reason why people watch Ren-TV, pray to God, are "treated" by conspiracies, etc., etc. Banal lack of education and desire for self-learning.

Wordpress is an easy to use and free CMS.
Plus, under it there are many free plugins and templates that make it possible to add various functions to the site.
