Why is the EDS stored on external media (flash drive, smart card, etc.)?

As part of the question, they are interested in whether I can store my key on the server and not use the media every time? Are there any restrictions? Will it work?

Either I misunderstood your question, or it is tantamount to the question "Why is the PIN code stored separately from the bank card?"...

As far as I understand, the program for which the digital signature is used can only read from the root of the media + the signature files themselves have the same name. You can use virtual disks.

it’s quite possible, of course, depending on why the keys are and how this program (service) works, for example, I store it from a bank client, although I know that it’s not very correct to do this, but since I run the KB through Windows in a virtual machine, it’s more convenient for me, and in the beech, nothing sticks out permanently superfluous.

Depending on the type of key, it can technically be put in the registry or in a folder on the server and everything will work. But this is really equivalent to writing a pin code on a bank card.
